6.Multi-Purpose Vessels (MPVs)
Versatile ships designed for the transportation of a diverse range of cargoes. MPVs are specifically constructed to accommodate various types of cargo, including wood, steel, building materials, rolls of paper, and bulk cargo.
Multi-Purpose Vessels can be classified into four categories: vessels with and without cargo gear, coastal trade liners, and sea-river vessels. Larger MPVs possess the advantage of carrying different types of cargo on the same voyage. On the other hand, smaller MPVs, despite lacking this flexibility, are preferred for accessing smaller harbors due to their shallow draft capabilities.
The complex design of these vessels is a result of their diverse operating conditions. They must be equipped to handle heavy loads, large objects, and unitized cargo in both bulk and roll-on/roll-off methods. This necessitates the inclusion of various types of loading gear to facilitate the different cargo handling requirements.
According to DNV (Det Norske Veritas), there are approximately 15,000 MPVs worldwide, varying in size from small coastal vessels to large ships with heavy lift capabilities. Our Company offers valuable insights into the world of MPVs, including their design complexities, operational characteristics, and their significant role in the transportation industry. Explore our resources to delve deeper into the fascinating realm of multi-purpose vessels.
